The lake is located in three Kazakh regions: Karaganda, Almaty and Zhambyl. To the north of the lake is the Kazakh melkosopochnik, and to the west is Betpak-Dala. The Chu-Ili mountains, as well as the Saryesik-Atyrau and Taukum sands are located in the south of the lake. The shape of the lake resembles a crescent, and the height above sea level reaches 340 meters. The lake has a winding coastline with bays and coves. There are quite a few islands on the lake, the largest ones can be called Basaral and Tasaral.
