The History of European Nudism
Austria has become famous for its negative attitude to nudism – this is the radical difference between the country and Russia and Germany. In Poland, before the beginning of the First World War (and after its completion), nudists gathered in remote and quiet corners. Official places for naked recreation first appeared in Zalishchyky (present-day Ukraine) and Polish Otwock.
The Poles were well aware of naturalistic trends – this can be read in numerous literary works. Examples are the memoirs of Czeslaw Milosz and Melchior Vankovic. The distinctive features of the then naturism were isolation, limited groups and the peculiar behavior of the participants. Like-minded naturists were closed social circles, it was not easy to join them.
The history of wild Ukrainian beaches originates in Zalishchyky. In 1939, the first unofficial nudist beach was opened in this town (then still Polish). The second such place appeared in Otvotsk. It was a very tiny beach, in fact, several private territories, where adherents of the ideas of naturism gathered in complete isolation. As for the first nudist group (official), it appeared in the town of Grudzendz, in 1897.
The great neighbors of Poland treated the nudes differently. Germany promoted naturism in cinema and magazine publications. The bodies of ancient heroes and mythical athletes associated with the greatness of the German nation were displayed. Naturism was closely connected with the idea of a superman. However, the roots of this phenomenon grow in the 19th century – it was then that secret nudist communities began to form. Members of these groups were sure that clothes prevent a person from liberating himself. In the early 1920s, German nudists began to publish their own magazines. Among them, it is worth noting "Strength and Beauty", "Laughing Life".
There was no place for nudists in the Soviet reality. Naturism was not officially recognized, it was considered a bourgeois prejudice. The authorities were sure that a Soviet citizen should carefully avoid " licentiousness and permissiveness." When socialism spread in Poland, the movement again went into the shadows. In Soviet Ukraine, nudism was also eradicated and considered unacceptable.
Adherents of nudism are sure that the refusal to wear clothes contributes to physical and psychological recovery. Nudist campsites have become a common phenomenon. Psychologists have not found any mental deviations in the ideas of naturism. The only exception is exhibitionism, which sometimes crosses the boundaries of normality. In general, nudism helps to get rid of complexes and sexual tightness, so it is considered a kind of cardinal therapy.
